Summer Special Events Intern

 Hours: required minimum 20 hours / week, elect up to 35 hours / week – flexible schedule. Must commit to working all day at PrideFest and set-up, June 14 – 18, 2011.
Term of internship: mid-May – mid-August
Stipend: $2,000

 The Special Events intern will be supervised by the Events Manager, and will provide programmatic, production, and administrative support to the Events Manager, Communications Manager, Community Engagement Coordinator, and VP of Strategic Initiatives. Interns will work on Denver PrideFest, the 1301 Happy Hour Series, and Ft. Collins PrideFest. This is a unique opportunity to gain substantive knowledge about event planning and non-profit management from the inside of the third largest Pride celebration in the nation and one of the largest LGBT community centers in the US.
Depending on interests and skill sets, responsibilities may include:

• PrideFest personnel relations; contact with vendors, entertainers, sponsors, parade participants, and volunteers
• PrideFest marketing; assisting in multi-channel marketing efforts
• PrideFest operations; responsibility for infrastructure build, maintenance and load-out. May also include partial responsibility for a PrideFest entertainment area, including Family Interactive Area, Volunteer Support, Parade, Main Stage, VIP, Dyke March, Dance Stage, or Country Stage
• PrideFest administration; records, database management, PrideFest committee support. Assist in implementation of administrative infrastructure systems for PrideFest committee. Assist in production of PrideFest post-production report and post-event follow-up
• 1301 Happy Hour; production of event, volunteer management, assistance with marketing and sponsorship activations
• Ft. Collins PrideFest; assist with vendor relations, sponsor relations, marketing, production, and entertainment coordination
• Additional areas of opportunity; marketing; social media planning and execution, website administration; volunteer management, sponsor relations, event analysis

Specific Learning Opportunities:
• Learn the fundamentals of event planning, including production, personnel management, budgeting and budget management;
• Learn fundamentals sponsor and vendor relations and non-profit fundraising;
• Understand the role data management and analysis plays in healthy events and non-profits
• Learn fundamentals of marketing, analytics, and product fulfillment and delivery;
• Interact with information technology and various website and social media channels
• Understand the benefits of applying the highest production values to events and goals

Requirements:

• ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• if currently a student, enrolled as junior or senior undergraduate, or graduate level
• great sense of humor and adventure
• valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• sensitivity to GLBT issues and ability to work responsibly a in GLBT environment
• prior event experience and IT knowledge a plus

Supervision:
The intern will be supervised by Events Manager at The Center. At the beginning of the internship, the supervisor and the intern will meet to evaluate the intern’s skills and goals. A work plan based on those skills and goals, as well as the organization’s needs, will be developed for the duration of the internship.
The intern will meet briefly at the beginning of each work day with the supervisor to review tasks for the day. He or she will also meet monthly to evaluate progress on overall work plan. There will be a final meeting at the end of the internship to evaluate accomplishments.

Work Space and Accessibility:
The intern will work in an existing cubicle, centrally located in the office, which will be shared with part-time staff from other programs of the Center when they are not working. He or she will work with appropriate office supplies, a small filing space, an up-to-date desk top computer, and a phone.
The Center’s office is located in central Denver, near bus lines and light rail. Free parking is provided on the same block as the building.

Diverse Populations:
As a community center dedicated to serving a minority population, The Center works daily with groups and individuals far outside of the mainstream community. Our youth drop-in center, Rainbow Alley, serves a wide array of economically disadvantaged youth and youth from a multitude of cultural backgrounds. Our elders program, SAGE of the Rockies, serves and advocates for a 55+ population. Visitors to our space and service recipients are predominantly low-income. The staff of The Center represents a strong gender, ethnic, and generational mix, as does our Board of Directors.
